MRCGP · Applied Knowledge Test

AKT exam dates 2027 and 2026

The RCGP runs the Applied Knowledge Test four times a year, in January, April, July and October. Every sitting has three deadlines that matter more than the exam date itself: the reasonable-adjustments cut-off, the day you must have booked and paid, and the short window to choose your Pearson VUE test centre. All of them are below, in order.

Booking is two steps, not one

Most missed sittings come from assuming the RCGP booking is the whole job. It isn't.

  1. 1

    Book and pay through MyRCGP

Log in to MyRCGP, open My Exams and book your sitting. You can do this up to 12 months ahead. Payment must be complete by the final booking deadline. Staged payments are available: 25% when you book or six months out, 25% at twelve weeks, and the rest by the deadline. Both early payments are refundable if you pull out before the deadline.

  2. 2

Choose your Pearson VUE test centre

About a week after the booking deadline a short window opens, usually ten days, to pick a test centre and time slot. Popular centres fill on day one. If you don't choose a seat in the window you cannot sit that day.

  3. 3

Sit the exam, then wait about four weeks

160 single-best-answer questions in 2 hours 40 minutes. Results are released at 17:00 on the published day in your MRCGP Trainee ePortfolio.

AKT dates: questions we get asked

How many times a year is the AKT held?

Four. The RCGP runs sittings in January, April, July and October. Each is a single day, sat at Pearson VUE test centres across the UK.

When do I have to book by?

You must have booked and paid through MyRCGP by the final booking deadline, which is roughly eight weeks before the exam. About a week after that deadline, a separate window opens for you to choose your Pearson VUE test centre and time slot. Miss either and you wait for the next sitting.

How far ahead can I book?

Up to 12 months before your intended sitting. Booking early gets you first choice of test centre when the Pearson window opens.

How much does the AKT cost?

The RCGP fee is £481 per attempt for sittings up to November 2026 and £494 for sittings from January 2027. Staged payments are available: 25% at booking or six months out, 25% at twelve weeks, and the balance by the final booking deadline. Both early payments are refundable if you withdraw before the deadline.

When do results come out?

About four weeks after the exam, at 17:00 on the published results day, in your MRCGP Trainee ePortfolio.

What if I need reasonable adjustments?

Apply through MyRCGP by the reasonable adjustments deadline for your sitting, which falls about three weeks before the booking deadline. The RCGP needs supporting evidence, so start early.

When should I start preparing?

Most candidates give themselves three to four months. Dr Omar's 90% Clinical Knowledge course runs once before each sitting, timed to finish a couple of weeks before exam day, with mocks in the final month.
